Refurbishing the COMAND Screen
I finally got around to working on a minor repair I’ve been wanting to attempt for awhile.
As The Banana is over 20 years old, the COMAND screen had started to look a little faded. This is due to the anti-glare coating on the screen aging, and it takes on a cloudy, blue tint.
It is possible to remove the coating and then add a replacement anti-glare screen, and I figured I’d give it a shot.
I can’t find the post, but one owner recommended using a silver polish to remove the old coating. I had Blitz Silver Shine on hand.

It worked well. I forgot to get a “before” picture but did remember to take one about halfway through cleaning.

I took my time, working on one section of the screen and then moving on to the next. After about 30 minutes or so, I had almost all of the old anti-glare coating removed.

Now came the harder part - installing the screen cover. The references I found all recommended NuShield, but their website is a total pain to navigate. I forgot how I found it, but for my car I needed part number NU308. To find it go to this link and then search for the part number in the drop down.
These are not cheap (as I write this they are $22.77 each plus shipping) but I ended up ordering two as I was certain to mess one up, which I did.
The screens come with a film cover on each side that you have to remove. First, you remove the “tacky” side. Once it is applied and you work all of the bubbles out, you can then remove the other side. The first one I put on immediately picked up some tiny piece of dust and once it was attached to the screen it was impossible to remove. So I then used the now damaged screen cover to pick up any other bits before going to my backup screen.

It actually looks a lot better in person than in the picture. The small scratch in the middle of the left side is actually there, and I’m wondering if I created it while removing the old film, but I really don’t notice it with the screen on. I haven’t driven the car yet in the sun to see how well it works, but overall it looks better than it did.
Now to spend some time getting all of the silver polish off the side buttons (grin)
